A federal inmate was back in custody last week after he walked out of the Calhoun County (Ala.) Jail early last Sunday morning. According to Sheriff Larry Amerson, the inmate -- 26-year-old Antonio Lavar Boyd -- was in a holding cell when he managed to get away through some electronic locks that had either malfunctioned or were left unlocked. Amerson said Boyd is a transgender and also goes by the name Shanita Freeman. He managed to hitch a ride, then stole the car and drove to Birmingham where he was later picked by U.S. Marshals last Sunday night. Authorities said he was wearing a wig, dress and makeup. Boyd was originally jailed on a weapons charge. Amerson said he's conducting an investigation to determine how Boyd escaped the jail. |
