The director of a boot camp in Arizona where a teenage boy died in 2001 was sentenced Tuesday to six years in prison. Charles Long, director of the America's Buffalo Soldiers Re-enactors Association boot camp, could have been sentenced to up to 27 years in prison, but Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Ronald Reinstein sentenced him to six years. During the hearing last Tuesday, Long apologized to the family members of Anthony Haynes, the youth who died at the "tough love" camp in July 2001. Haynes, who attended the camp near Buckeye, died of complications of dehydration and near-drowning after he collapsed at the desert camp and was placed in a bathtub to cool down, investigators said. The camp's regimen included wearing black uniforms in triple-digit heat and harsh discipline. |
