Knox sheriff makes case to commission for jail expansion |

On any given weekday, Knox County jail inmates stand shoulder-to-shoulder and knee-to-knee in holding cells. Overcrowded inmates get restless. Assaults on corrections officers have spiked. And every year a growing jail population puts the county closer to violation of a federal court order, Sheriff Tom Spangler told the Knox County Commission's Finance Committee at its Monday meeting. "I'm not up here to tell you to build a new building," the sheriff said. "My purpose is to tell you we do have a jail overcrowding problem. We've got to look down the road." Read More. |
