Idaho prison to modify male dorm to serve growing female inmate population |

In the face of a burgeoning female inmate population, the Idaho Department of Correction is remodeling some prison space designed for men so it could serve women instead. Department of Correction board members this week voted unanimously to convert the north dormitory of Kuna's South Idaho Correctional Institution to make it an option for female inmates. The project will include a $41,142 price tag for one-time construction costs and $1.2 million in ongoing annual costs. Numbering more than 1,100, women make up roughly 13 percent of Idaho’s prison population, and prison officials have said they are the state’s fastest-growing demographic in department custody. In a presentation to the Idaho Department of Correction board of directors Tuesday, Janeena White, the department’s evaluation and compliance supervisor, estimated the female inmate population could increase to 1,400 by January 2022.
