Commissioners approve inmate-housing contract |

The possibility of transporting Midland County jail inmates to another facility moved forward after a decision Monday. The Commissioners’ Court approved a revised contract, which addresses housing inmates at a facility in Haskell County. The decision comes as electronic upgrades have already started at the Midland County Central Detention Center. New equipment from Sydaptic Inc. is intended to improve door controls as well as intercoms that allow inmates to talk to officers. Sheriff Gary Painter told commissioners the company would continue its work Monday on the project, which was previously anticipated to last six weeks. While the equipment is being installed, Painter said up to 96 people at a time could be housed at a facility in Haskell County, which is north of Abilene and a three-hour drive from Midland.
