RICHMOND – At approximately 3:55 p.m. yesterday, a Sussex I State Prison offender injured a Corrections Officer at the Waverly, Virginia facility. The 32-year old male officer sustained two non-life threatening wounds. The officer was treated and released the same day from Southside Memorial Hospital. At the time of the incident, the officer was attempting to deliver a mattress to the offender, a 26-year old inmate serving a life sentence for 1st degree murder. There was an immediate response from other Sussex I officers to stop the assault. The officer sustained injuries to the face and the back of his head. He is recuperating at home. The type of weapon used by the offender will be confirmed by the investigation that is now underway, but it appears to have been metal fence tie. |
