Inmate says state wrongly denying him erectile dysfunction drugs

While government officials launch a new campaign to stop Medicaid coverage for sex offenders' impotence drugs, Connecticut authorities have quietly been fighting a lawsuit by an inmate being denied similar medications.
Eugene Mercer, 41, who is serving a 45-year sentence for felony murder, alleges that the state is violating his right to reasonable accommodations under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. He claims his impotence is due to a neurological disorder and AIDS. State officials have refused to give him the medication, saying impotence is not a disability under the federal act.
The lawsuit, filed last year, is pending in New Britain Superior Court.
