(Clarinda) -- A staff member at the Clarinda Correctional Facility was injured in an altercation with a prisoner Monday evening. The Iowa Department of Corrections says a correctional officer was performing routine duties at his station shortly after 6:30 p.m. when he was confronted by an inmate. After a verbal exchange, the inmate unexpectedly began striking the officer with closed fists. The officer, while attempting to block the strikes, used pepper spray on the prisoner. After approximately 20 minutes, the officer gained control of the inmate, and additional officers arrived to assist in taking control of the situation. Read More. |
