South Dakota Secretary of Corrections announces January retirement |

PIERRE, S.D. -- South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced Thursday that the state’s Secretary of Corrections will retire in January at the close of Daugaard’s administration. According to the governor’s office on Nov. 1, Denny Kaemingk served as secretary for seven years. Prior to his appointment in 2011, Kaemingk worked in law enforcement and criminal justice for 33 years, rising from a patrolman with the Mitchell Police Department, to a special investigator with the Attorney General’s Office, to a member of the Board of Pardons and Paroles. “As we saw this week, the Secretary of Corrections has a difficult and challenging role,” Daugaard said in the news release, referencing the state’s execution of Rodney Berget on Monday.
