Oregon prison inmate dies while in hospice care

A 53-year-old man convicted in 2016 of slashing another man with a knife died Sunday in prison hospice care, according to the Oregon Department of Corrections.

Gary Schurgin died while being held at the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution in Pendleton. He was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison after being convicted of second-degree assault in Clatsop County in October 2016, state court records show.

The state corrections department hasn't said how Schurgin died or why he was in hospice care.
