Judge orders quarantine for inmate with tuberculosis at Vegas jail |

A judge in Las Vegas, Nev., has ordered a jail inmate to be quarantined after the inmate refused to take medication to treat tuberculosis. It's believed to be the first time a 2003 Nevada law allowing involuntary isolation of those with contagious diseases has been used. District Judge Jennifer Togliatti tried reasoning with the 55-year-old inmate, Juan Marin, via videoconference during a hearing last week. But Marin told the judge he believes he's cured and was angry that he hadn't received disability benefits from the federal government. Because of the risk to other inmates, the judge ordered Marin quarantined. The Legislature in 2003 passed a number of public health measures designed to combat potential bioterrorism, including one allowing those with diseases to be isolated against their will. Under the statute, free individuals could be taken from their homes if they were sick and uncooperative. |
