A cell block in a Hudson Valley (N.Y.) prison was locked down Wednesday after an inmate was stabbed, a state corrections spokeswoman said. The inmate, who was not identified, was stabbed in the abdomen at the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in the hamlet of Wallkill. Linda Foglia, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Correctional Services, said the victim was discovered by an officer at about 10 a.m. The maximum-security prison is home to 486 inmates. The victim was taken to St. Luke's Cornwall hospital for treatment. His condition was not known. Foglia said a makeshift knife was recovered from the cell block. Officers searched cells in the block for other weapons, she said. The cell block where the stabbing occurred houses about 67 inmates. |
