An inmate at the Passaic County (N.J.) Jail died after falling ill while in a holding cell waiting to be processed on two drug possession charges, jail officials said Wednesday. Mary Johnson, 44, of Paterson, died around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday after suffering what appeared to be cardiac arrest, Sheriff's Department spokesman Bill Maer said. Johnson was arrested by Paterson police Tuesday afternoon and brought to the jail at 1:30 p.m. At 9:20 p.m., other inmates alerted jail officers that Johnson appeared to need medical attention, Maer said. Not finding a pulse, the officers called department emergency medical technicians, who performed CPR. Johnson was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center and arrived at 10 p.m. She was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m., Maer said. "The last time the officers made the rounds in her area she was upright and didn't look like she was suffering any medical condition," Maer said. Rounds are conducted several times an hour, he said. |
