Privileges are gradually being returned to inmates at the Swannanoa Valley (N.C.) Youth Development Center after five people were hurt in fighting that involved up to 40 juveniles. Dawn Jernigan, spokeswoman with the N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, said two wings of the center were involved in the Wednesday fighting. A lockdown was in effect on Thursday, but Jernigan said Friday that some privileges had been restored. Jernigan said normal status should be restored at the center by Monday Five students were arrested following the incident that sent two staff members and three juveniles to the hospital. Jernigan said the injuries were minor, ranging from bruises to cuts. Another three students were arrested Thursday in connection with the fight. Arrest warrants said the boys broke cafeteria chairs and tables, throwing them across the cafeteria. Five were charged with assaulting an officer, causing serious injury after they "repeatedly kicked and punched" a center employee. Charges against the eight include felony inciting a riot, felony conspiring to incite a riot, simple assault, failing to disperse and assaulting an officer, causing serious injury-a felony, arrest warrants said. The eight juveniles arrested were 16 to 17 years old. The center houses 104 boys, said Michael Haley, grants administrator for the department. |
