An inmate has been charged for his alleged participation in a riot last year at the Crowley County (Colo.) Correction Facility, and authorities say charges against more inmates are possible. District Attorney Rod Fouracre said Reuben Sustatia is charged with attempted second-degree murder in the July 20 riot at the prison run by a private company. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for later this month in La Junta. Fouracre said he could not comment further. Sustatia was being held at the Crowley County jail. More than a third of the prison's 1,125 inmates joined in the uprising last July that caused significant damage to at least two of the facility's five housing units. Inmates set three fires, damaged several living units and destroyed the vocational greenhouse. Rioters smashed furniture, destroyed desks, televisions and bunks, ripped sinks and toilets from the walls and set off fire alarms and sprinklers. Inmate Rudy Lujan, 32, was stabbed and assaulted during the riot. |
