| Noem: Sheriff Leidholt to helm SD Department of Corrections |

Governor-elect Kristi Noem on Thursday announced she will appoint long-time Hughes County Sheriff Mike Leidholt to her cabinet as secretary of the state Department of Corrections once she takes office Jan. 5. Leidholt, 65, has been in law enforcement for four decades and has been sheriff for 24 years, also running the 168-bed county jail in Pierre which takes in people from surrounding counties as well as up to 100 federal inmates or more a night. “It’s essential we create an environment in which both families and growing businesses can feel safe to call South Dakota home,” Noem said in a news release on Thursday. “I’m thrilled to work with Sheriff Leidholt to expand correctional options in our state, keep victims at the center of our criminal justice system, and reduce the likelihood of repeat offenders.
