Authorities in Key West, Fla., say a jail inmate briefly escaped custody last week when he faked an injury to his ankle. Sheriff's officials say Timothy O'Neil was caught shortly after he jumped out of a wheelchair after a court appearance and ran off. A perimeter was set up by Monroe County and Key West authorities, leading to his capture. O'Neil had been taken to the courthouse in a wheelchair because of his alleged ankle injury and an apparent injury to one of his arms. He was not shackled or handcuffed. The 23-year-old Montana resident is being held on jail on charges including an escape from a Montana jail, and multiple burglary, theft and fraud charges. The Sheriff's Office will be reviewing the case to determine if applicable policies were followed properly, or if any changes or corrections to policies need to be made. |
