Regal Entertainment Group, which owns and operates 562 multiplexes in 39 states, is exiling violent video games from its movie-theater lobbies, the Associated Press reported Sept. 19. "Regal Entertainment Group is committed to providing the highest quality entertainment experience for moviegoers of all ages," said Regal CEO Mike Campbell. "Placement of certain video games is not conducive to the overall environment we strive to achieve." The nation's largest movie chain said video arcade games that contain graphically violent character deaths, violence toward law-enforcement officers or other figures of authority, graphic depictions of sexual behavior or nudity, and obscene or foul language would be banned from Regal Cinemas, United Artists Theatres, Edwards Theatres and Hoyts Cinemas. Company spokesman Dick Westerling said the decision to ban the violent games resulted from complaints from parents. "There are some games that really push the envelope with content that isn't suitable for common areas," Westerling said. No similar ban is planned for violent movies, however. |
