North Dakota's top prison administrator is retiring in July, and the state labor commissioner will succeed her, Gov. John Hoeven says. Elaine Little is stepping down as head of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on July 1. She plans to stay on through July to help with the transition, the governor said last Tuesday. Leann Bertsch, whom Hoeven appointed as state labor commissioner in August 2004, will succeed Little as corrections director. Bertsch is a former assistant Burleigh County prosecutor. She was approached last week about taking the position, Bertsch said Tuesday. "I certainly think that corrections is a very important and critical role in the criminal justice system," Bertsch said. "I've always admired the high-quality people that work for the Department of Corrections. They're hard-working, and they're dedicated to their jobs." Little could not be reached for comment. In a statement issued by the governor, Little praised the corrections agency's staff, saying their "hard work ... has allowed the department to meet new challenges that we have faced." Hoeven said he will appoint a new labor commissioner later. Bertsch will be paid $70,000 annually in her new job, an increase from her current $60,000 salary. Little is paid $76,404 annually. |
