Bill would allow death row inmates to be housed at other prisons |

Condemned male prisoners could be incarcerated at high-security prisons other than San Quentin under a bill that's been approved by the California Assembly. The measure by Assemblyman Joe Nation of San Rafael was sent to the Senate by a 41 to 31 vote despite repeated Republican attempts to use hold up action on bills because of Democratic efforts to limit debate. Nation says the bill would give flexibility to the Department of Corrections instead of requiring officials to send condemned prisoners to an increasingly overcrowded death row at San Quentin. The department is planning to build a new 220-million dollar death row at San Quentin. But some lawmakers want to close the 153-year-old prison, saying it costs at least 25 million dollars more per year to run than similar facilities elsewhere. |
