A Dothan, Ala., inmate involved in an altercation with another inmate in a day room inside the city jail died after she spent two days on life support.
Arnetta Reeves, 37, lost consciousness Thursday morning after an altercation at the Dothan City Jail with inmate Terreko Thomas, 24. Reeves died late Saturday.
Dothan Police Chief John Powell said charges against Thomas could be forthcoming.
Both were being held in jail on petty theft charges. Jail officials said Thomas struck Reeves in the head when a verbal argument turned physical.
Powell said jail officers separated the inmates and the two women were seated at a table.
Reeves got up to return to her cell on the jail's second floor moments later, but became weak and slumped to the floor. Officers administered first aid and called for emergency medical technicians. She was transported to Southeast Alabama Medical Center by ambulance.
Powell said it is possible a pre-existing medical condition could have contributed to Reeves' death.
According to medical doctors, Reeves may have had an aneurism that she was unaware of and the fight could have aggravated the condition, causing the aneurism to rupture.
