2 Ill. jail officers quit, 3 suspended in inquiry

Two Kane County (Ill.) Jail officers resigned when questioned about drug use, and three others have been suspended on accusations of drug use or theft, Sheriff Ken Ramsey announced Wednesday.
A former Kane corrections officer was charged last month with theft and official misconduct.
Ramsey has asked the Kane County Merit Commission, a three-member civilian board, to fire two of the suspended officers, both veterans. The third officer was suspended without pay for 30 days on an administrative charge of misusing inmate property.
Ramsey said he turned over findings of an internal probe, which included interviews with more than 20 of the jail's 104 sworn officers, to the Kane County State's attorney's office and further criminal charges were possible but not probable.
Kane County State's Atty. John Barsanti said he has been monitoring the investigation and, if warranted, will seek grand jury subpoenas after reviewing the findings.
The officers, who were charged either criminally or administratively, worked in booking, but Ramsey said he did not believe it was a conspiracy. Rather, the investigation uncovered a collection of misdeeds by individuals, he said.
"We had some bad apples, and we swept them out," Ramsey said. "We cleaned house in a decisive manner. When we found out something was wrong, we moved quickly. I'm very proud of that."
Former corrections officer Albert Jackson, 42, of Aurora, who was charged last month with theft and official misconduct, is accused of stealing from inmates. He is free on $5,000 bond.
Because the Kane County State's attorney's office is defending Jackson, Ramsey and others in a pending federal civil rights lawsuit brought by an inmate, First Assistant State's Atty. Clint Hull said he is trying to have a special prosecutor handle Jackson's criminal case.
Jackson is scheduled to return to court July 8.
Ramsey declined to identify the two corrections officers who resigned when questioned about possible drug use.
