Several correction staff members were injured Thursday in incidents with two inmates at Garner Correctional Institution, state officials said. The first injuries at the facility for offenders with significant mental health needs occurred when an inmate began assaulting a staff member, Connecticut Department of Correction spokesman Brian Garnett said. The inmate, Charles Redshirt, broke the nose of a staff member. Other staff members were injured as they tried to restrain Redshirt. A second officer was bitten on the finger and a third suffered a broken wrist. A fourth staff member was mistakenly bitten by a dog that was brought to the prison, Garnett said. Redshirt, 22, of Stamford, is serving a 34-month term after violating his probation, Garnett said. The underlying charge was not available Thursday. Later Thursday, a staff member suffered a broken finger trying to restrain an inmate, Garnett said. The inmate's name was not available early Friday. State police are investigating. Garnett said a report on the incidents was expected Friday. He did not have additional information about the inmates. Wayne Meyers, president of Connecticut Correction Employees AFSCME, Local 1565, said at least one inmate was a security-risk group member and that both inmates had been transferred from Northern Correctional Institution. Meyers said the Department of Correction must find another way to provide mental health services for dangerous gang members. Garner "is not equipped to handle" such dangerous inmates, Meyers said. "It would require a change in the way they deliver services." Lt. Catherine Osten, president of the Correction Supervisors Council, said lieutenant staffing and training need to be increased at Garner. Garnett said the incidents were not related to staffing issues. |
