OGDENSBURG — City officials are urging Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo not to close a prison in the community, arguing that the local municipality is already struggling economically. Ogdensburg is home to two prisons, the Ogdensburg Correctional Facility at 1 Correction Way, and Riverview Correctional Facility at 1110 Tibbitts Drive. The two medium-security facilities opened in 1982 and 1988, respectively. Earlier this month Gov. Cuomo announced that he wants the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to recommend three prisons for closure from among the 54 located across the state. The closures are justified, according to Gov. Cuomo, because the state’s inmate population has dropped by approximately 17 percent since 2011. Over the past 20 years he said the prison population has dropped from nearly 73,000 to roughly 47,000 today. Read More. |
