A 34-year-old male inmate was airlifted after his hand was crushed in a footwear mill press at South Woods State Prison last Wednesday afternoon.
Matt Schuman, spokesperson for the New Jersey Dept. of Corrections, said that the inmate's left hand was flattened, but no other details of the injury were given.
The injured inmate was airlifted to Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center, Schuman added, but his condition wasn't available at the time of report.
DOC officials are holding the identity and residence of the inmate pending notification of the family.
South Woods prison has several different industrial buildings through DEPTCOR, New Jersey's correctional industry program.
Specifically, the prison has industrial plants, where the inmates work, that produce footwear, clothing, printing and graphics/signs and meat and produce, Schuman said. The incident occurred at 2:30 p.m. and is under investigation.
