The Alabama Senate on Tuesday approved a bill aiming to stop sheriffs from pocketing excess food funds.

The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, passed 31-0. The bill also increases the current daily food allowance from $1.75 a day to $2.25 per day, with an annual adjustment each year starting in 2021.
