Five inmates were beheaded and 14 prison officers held as hostages by the rebellious inmates Tuesday in a prison in southeastern Brazil, prison officials said.
The rebellious inmates at the Presidente Venceslau Penitentiary of Sao Paulo demanded the presence of a judge and the departure of the military police from the prison, according to Danilo Bomfim, spokesman for the Prison Guards Union.
During the riot, a gang called "First Capital Commando" forced prison officers to surrender and invaded the zone where the victims were kept.
The five killed inmates would have been expelled members of the criminal ring, who were kept by the authorities in a "safe" place.
"They were stabbed and beaten to death and then decapitated. Their heads have been placed next to each other on top of one of the prison walls for all to see," said Bomfim.
The riot started on Tuesday morning and continued until the afternoon.
