New Brunswick corrections officials locked down the Renous Institution Monday after inmates lit fires and broke windows in their cells. Officers at the maximum-security prison say about 20 people were involved. No one was hurt. Brian Richard, who speaks for the Renous prison, said the trouble was started by some inmates who had been confined to their cells since last Thursday. "During that time, we had segregated three inmates, and they were protesting those three not coming out of seg," Richard said. "This is what we assume. However, we are doing an investigation, just to investigate all the circumstances surrounding this incident." Richard said the RCMP were notified and an emergency response team was called in to deal with the troublemakers. It took until 5 a.m. Tuesday to restore calm. Richard said charges may be laid. Officials haven't said how long the lockdown will last. Renous is the second prison in New Brunswick to be hit with troubles in the past week. The 455 inmates at the Dorchester penitentiary have been locked down since a series of assaults at the prison last Thursday. Officials are reviewing video surveillance tapes to identify those responsible. In the meantime, the inmates are being kept in their cells 23 hours a day, with one hour for outside exercise. |
