Condemned Inmate Miguel Angel Magallon Dies of Unknown Cause

SAN QUENTIN — Condemned inmate Miguel Magallon who was on California’s death row from Los Angeles County, was found unresponsive in his cell at San Quentin State Prison on Saturday, April 20, at 6:17 a.m. Emergency lifesaving measures were started immediately; however, Magallon was pronounced dead at 6:49 a.m. An autopsy will be conducted to determine his cause of death.

Magallon, 35, was sentenced to death in Los Angeles County on Oct. 15, 2009, for the 2004 murder of Captain Michael Sparkes, Sr., of the Los Angeles County Office of Public Safety.

Magallon had been on California’s death row since Oct. 26, 2009.

Since 1978, when California reinstated capital punishment, 79 condemned inmates have died from natural causes, 26 have committed suicide, 13 were executed in California, one was executed in Missouri, one was executed in Virginia, 11 have died from other causes and five – including Magallon – are pending a cause of death. There are currently 736 offenders on California’s death row.
