A prison escapee led police on a wild car chase in Larimer County (Colo.) early Wednesday, resulting in the suspect trying to hide underwater near Estes Park.
William Thomas Kemp, 43, faces several charges, including criminal impersonation and false reporting. Kemp was wanted on a warrant from the Colorado Department of Corrections for escape.
Kemp was serving a three- year sentence for possession of a controlled substance and has an extensive criminal history dating to 1990, said Larimer County sheriff's spokeswoman Eloise Campanella.
Police originally identified Kemp as Dennis Ray Cochell of Thornton. But a fingerprint check showed the suspect actually was Kemp, Campanella said.
"Kemp has numerous aliases and false birth dates," she said.
A sheriff's deputy tried to stop a 1989 pickup for speeding in the area of West 57th Street and North County Road 19 in Loveland about 12:36 a.m.
The pickup fled from deputies through Loveland and Big Thomp son Canyon, at times reaching speeds of 90 mph, Campanella said. Road spikes flattened the right and left front tires of the truck during the chase, resulting in Kemp running the pickup onto the shoulder near U.S. 34 and Mall Road in Estes Park.
Kemp allegedly tried to hide underwater in a creek near Mount Olympus Dam, but a police dog pulled him out, Campanella said.
He faces several charges related to the chase, including drug possession and vehicular eluding.
