Police on Sunday caught an inmate who escaped a day earlier from a Calif. mental hospital, authorities said. Jose Camelo Cruz, 27, escaped on foot Saturday night from Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino following an inmate count, said Lt. Tim Shirlock of the state Department of Corrections. Cruz was unarmed and it was unclear how he escaped. Cruz was picked up by police Sunday afternoon in this Central Valley city, Shirlock said. The escaped convict remained in police custody but was expected to be transferred back to the mental institution in San Bernardino. Cruz had been admitted to Patton on April 8 for suspicion of burglary and assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer. The offenses occurred in Tulare County, which encompasses Visalia, officials said. Visalia is about 160 miles north-northwest of downtown Los Angeles. |
