Middleton Jail inmate dies awaiting trial |

NEWBURYPORT — Just days after Richard Pike was arraigned in Newburyport District Court last Monday on heroin and fentanyl drug charges, his sister, Nancy Marcotte, received a call from the Essex County Sheriff's Department that her younger brother had died. According to a letter written by an Essex County Sheriff's Department official detailing that phone call, the 51-year-old Pike died Thursday, May 2, while in custody at the Middleton Jail. The same letter states that an autopsy would be done to determine cause of death. On Saturday, April 28, Pike and 33-year-old Brittany N. Quint of Dover, N.H., were arrested after a traffic stop on Interstate 95 in Amesbury and charged with heroin trafficking, fentanyl trafficking and conspiracy to violate drug laws. In all, police seized 40 grams of heroin with a street value of up to $4,000 and 28 grams of fentanyl valued at $2,800. Read More. |
