Two corrections officers have been charged with selling drugs to inmates at the Essex County (N.J.) jail, a scheme that prosecutors said earned the men hundreds of dollars a week. Malcolm Hughes, 29, and Derrick Reynolds, 25, both of Newark, face official misconduct and drug charges. Hughes, who authorities said netted about $1,000 a week from the illicit sales, was arrested Friday afternoon. Reynolds, who authorities said made about $200 a week from the sales, was arrested June 11. The arrests stemmed from an investigation using an undercover officer and numerous tape recordings, said acting Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow. "We cannot condone corruption within our jail system," she said. "The actions of these corrections officers show a complete violation of public trust and a betrayal of their oaths of office." Both suspects appeared June 13 before Superior Court Judge Michael A. Petrolle. He set bail for Hughes at $100,000 and at $75,000 for Reynolds. It could not immediately be determined if the men had hired lawyers. Keisha Nelson, 18, of Newark was charged as a conspirator and accomplice with Hughes. "We will continue to aggressively pursue and prosecute those members of law enforcement, in this case corrections officers, who engage in criminal conduct," Dow said. |
