A correctional officer at the Arizona State Prison Complex - Safford died June 9 after sustaining a gunshot wound while on duty. Gabriel Saucedo, 36, was patrolling the perimeter at 12:25 p.m. when he was injured, leading investigators to question whether the shooting was accidental, Bart Graves, media relations manager for the Arizona Department of Corrections (ADOC), said. "Our people got there at lightning speed and got him to the hospital quickly," Graves said, "but Saucedo already lost too much blood." Saucedo was airlifted to Mount Graham Regional Medical Center, and he died during surgery at about 4:45 p.m. Graves said Saucedo was assigned to a post on perimeter patrol, where he was guarding against escapes. "Guards are armed," Graves said. "The weapon discharged, but all factors point toward an accident." Graves said the incident is under investigation, and Saucedo was alone in his truck when the shooting occurred. Dora Schriro, director of the Arizona Department of Corrections, issued a formal statement after Saucedo's death. "The department mourns his loss," she said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Services are pending." Saucedo has been employed by the ADOC since May 2004. He was married and the father of three. |
