An inmate's wife said she will push for a human-rights advocate to work with the Mecklenburg County (Va.) jail after prisoners were served maggot-infested food 10 days ago. Family members and friends said that some of the inmates got sick after eating hamburgers and hot dogs containing insect larvae on the morning of June 5. Mecklenburg Sheriff Danny Fox acknowledged that inmates mistakenly were served the food, but he said neither jail- nor medical-staff members were notified of any illness. The food was left over from a picnic for school resource officers the previous day and had been taken to the jail to be served to the staff, Fox said. "A miscommunication between sheriff's office employees and kitchen staff resulted in the meat not being refrigerated during the night," Fox said in a statement. "The food was mistakenly served the next day to the inmates." The contaminated food was taken from the inmates as soon as jail staff members were notified about the larvae, Fox said. But relatives and friends of some of the inmates disagree that no illness resulted from the incident. Dina Michel-Wiggins of Madison Heights said her husband, Jerry Wiggins, suffered from diarrhea and vomiting immediately after eating the food. She also said her husband, who is bipolar and suffers from depression, was frantic after discovering the maggots. That evening, Jerry Wiggins scratched his arm all night "because he thought the maggots were walking on him," and the next day he shaved his body, she said. Maknakesha Terry of Clarksville said her boyfriend, Kevin Smith, also suffered from diarrhea and vomiting. "I was real upset about it," Terry said. "They acted like it was no problem. . . . I wouldn't feed a dog bad meat." Meanwhile, Michel-Wiggins said she has sent information about the incident to members of the General Assembly and the Virginia chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. She said she hopes that a human-rights advocate might be able to work with the Mecklenburg jail on a regular basis to improve conditions for inmates. "If something happens one place, it is very likely it will happen someplace else," she said. |
