He turned out to be Erie’s bogeyman. For a generation of local children who grew up in the 1960s, the crime that Eugene Patterson was convicted of committing left them wary and their parents worried. Patterson was found guilty in 1989 in the murder of 10-year-old Christine Watson, whose body was found along Walnut Creek in Millcreek Township in July 1966. Patterson, 76, died of natural causes on Saturday at the State Correctional Institution at Forest County, where he had been serving a life sentence for first-degree murder, the Department of Corrections said. The nearly 23-year hiatus between Christine’s death and Patterson’s conviction made his case one of the most notable at the Erie County Courthouse. Read More. |
