Iowa inmates join effort to plug workforce shortage, housing gap in new prison program |

NEWTON, Iowa — A new home-building program designed to bridge workforce and affordable housing gaps launched on Thursday. Its participants: men incarcerated at the Newton Correctional Facility. Nail by nail and board by board, six inmates at the state prison---who are seeking apprenticeships offered through Iowa Prison Industries---are building homes in an effort to address an affordable housing shortage in the state. Those homes will be sold to Homes for Iowa, a new nonprofit, that will dispatch them statewide and sell them from $120,000 to $130,000. Read More. |
