| Virginia Department of Corrections employees to volunteer at RAM event in Wise |

RICHMOND – More than two dozen Virginia Department of Corrections employees will be among the volunteers this weekend offering support for the Remote Area Medical event in Wise. Organizers are expecting a throng of people at Friday’s opening of the event that brings free medical, dental and vision care to the economically stressed region during its three-day run from Friday, June 28 to Sunday, June 30. VADOC employees from Wallens Ridge State Prison and Wise Correctional Unit will be at the Wise County Fairgrounds the day before the event begins, helping to secure the medical area. They will continue to volunteer day and night during the three-day event by greeting and guiding attendees, and ensuring security. “The Virginia Department of Corrections is committed to the communities we help keep safe,” said VADOC Director Harold Clarke. “These employees exemplify the spirit of the Department in their efforts to help their neighbors.” The Commonwealth of Virginia offers eligible employees up to 16 hours of community service leave per year, allowing them to offer their contributions to voluntary community events. “This event attracts a lot of people and they need guidance in finding services, facilities and simple comforts,” said Velisa Stallard of Wallens Ridge State Prison. “We’re glad to contribute to this life-sustaining event.” For more information on VADOC click: www.vadoc.virginia.gov. |
