Max-security prison fights lead to contraband sweep |

After two inmate fights broke out using makeshift weapons last week, correction officials conducted a sweep of the maximum-security prison in Walpole, Mass., yesterday in a search for contraband. MCI-Cedar Junction contains 630 of the state's most-dangerous male inmates. The search began yesterday morning and could continue into today, officials said. "These incidents at MCI-Cedar Junction require strong, decisive action," said Department of Correction Commissioner Kathleen M. Dennehy. "The DOC is in the business of operating safe and secure facilities and we are aggressive in ensuring that safety is not compromised." DOC spokeswoman Diane Wiffin said prison sweeps are common practice, noting that a similar two-day search was conducted last week at MCI-Concord. "We did find some contraband (at Concord) like pills and lighters and things that could have been turned into weapons," she said. |
