For the second time in just a couple of months an inmate at the Harlan County (Ky.) Jail tried to attack employees. Jail officials say they have numerous safety concerns and overcrowding issues, but those concerns are only temporary. The 64 bed Harlan County Jail is housing more than 100 inmates a day. Over the weekend an inmate, O.B. Baker, who had just been brought in by state police for dui attempted to attack two of the employees with a knife he had snuck in. "When I went around the front there I heard two of the officers in the back yell. I went around and they had him down on the ground and they sprayed him. I asked them what had happened and they said he'd pulled a knife and tried to cut two of the officers," Trooper Jason Young said. Young said he searched baker before taking him to the jail. "It is policy to pat somebody down before you put them in your cruiser and make sure they don't have any weapons on em but they can be missed," Jailer Curt Stallard said. Harlan County Jailer Curt Stallard says there won't be as many safety concerns once the brand new state of the art 250 bed Harlan County Detention Center is complete. "It will really be a big help because the booking area is going to be so much bigger and we'll have more room to get around the inmates and the policeman as they enter the jail and it will be a much better system." |
