A Washington State Penitentiary unit was on restricted movement yesterday morning after a fight involving 12 inmates erupted Tuesday evening. About 280 inmates in the prison's Unit 6, in the main institution, were affected by the modified lockdown, said prison spokeswoman Lori Scamahorn. Scamahorn said the fight started about 5:50 p.m. in the upper tier of a cell block when a Hispanic inmate entered a black inmate's cell intending to fight. Instead of finding one person in the cell, the inmate was confronted by three other inmates. The Hispanic inmate came back out shouting for help and ``eight of his buddies' ran to the area and began fighting with the three who had been in the cell, Scamahorn said. Corrections officers broke up the fight without use of force, Scamahorn said. One inmate sustained facial lacerations due to a fall and was taken to a hospital for treatment then brought back to the prison. After the fight, all inmates in Unit 6 were placed in lockdown, and all activities were canceled in the prison. Activity was returned to normal Wednesday except in Unit 6, Scamahorn said. Scamahorn said officials believe the incident was a carryover from an April 25 dining room brawl that began over an issue of ``disrespect' involving a black and Hispanic inmate. |
