The Department of Correction is investigating after six staff members at the Cheshire Correctional Institution were taken to local hospitals for possible exposure to the synthetic opioid fentanyl. At approximately, 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, an ambulance was called to the Cheshire Correctional Institution to transport a correction officer - who was in medical distress - to the hospital. At approximately 10:00 a staff member from the facility’s school system also began feeling unwell. Shortly thereafter, a school teacher and three additional correction officers reported feeling poorly. All of the affected staff members remained consciousness and alert. Two staff members have since been treated and released from the hospital. No offenders have exhibited signs of fentanyl exposure. The Connecticut State Police Hazmat team, and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection have reported to the Cheshire facility. The prison has been placed on lockdown status. Due to health privacy laws, the names of the staff who were affected are being withheld. The Department of Correction as well as the Connecticut State Police are investigating the matter. |
