A prison officer from Fairfield, Maine, was arrested Thursday and accused of smuggling heroin into the Maine State Prison in Warren. Sean Greenleaf, 32, of 44 Green Road has been charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin -- a charge that could net him 40 years in prison. The arrest followed a tip that an officer was smuggling drugs, resulting in a two-month probe by the Department of Corrections and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency. Authorities said Greenleaf had planned to meet Thursday with a supplier -- an undercover agent -- who was going to give him nine grams of heroin, packaged in four balloons, and marijuana to sneak into the prison. With a dozen officers staking out the Turnpike Mall in Augusta, Greenleaf was taken into custody without struggle, police said. "Investigating drugs is hard enough without having to investigate fellow law enforcement officers dealing inside the prison," said George Connick, a supervisor with the MDEA's Augusta unit. "It's certainly a violation of trust," Connick added. Denise Lord, an associate commissioner at the Department of Corrections, declined to comment on Greenleaf's arrest, but said keeping drugs out of the state's prisons is a constant challenge. "We try to be vigilant," she said. "Unfortunately there are cases where we are not successful." Lord said Greenleaf, who had worked at the prison since February, wasn't the first state prison employee arrested for drug smuggling. But she said such occurrences are rare and the state's prison force matches up favorably with those from other states. She also said corrections officers are not searched as they enter the state's prisons, although they do pass through metal detectors. |
