| 4 officers, 2 prisoners injured in altercations |

Four St. Clair County (Ill.) corrections officers and two prisoners have been injured in separate altercations over the past two days at the jail. Following a canine drug search about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, four maximum security prisoners rushed a corrections officer as he opened a door to return them to their cell block. The inmates prisoners are awaiting trial on murder charges or other serious felony violations. "He was trying to let them out one inmate at a time. They rushed him and began hitting him in the face," St. Clair County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Johnson said. While the fight was underway, other corrections officers rushed to help the officer who was in trouble. After the altercation was over, three corrections officers were taken to a hospital emergency room for treatment of injuries, Johnson said. One of the prisoners was taken to the jail infirmary and one went to a hospital emergency room, Johnson said. No charges have been filed because the altercation is still under investigation, Johnson said. In a separate incident, which Johnson said had nothing to do with the melee Thursday, another corrections officer got into a fight with an prisoners about 11: 30 a.m. Friday. "A fight broke out in one of the cell blocks, and a corrections officer who was attempting to break up the fight got hit in the head by an inmate," Johnson said. The corrections officer, who was not identified, suffered head lacerations and abrasions. He was taken to a local emergency room. |
