A corrections officer at the state prison in Lansing, Kansas, continues to recover after being allegedly attacked by an inmate last week. Sources familiar with the case told KMBC's Martin Augustine that the victim's injury is irreparable. Union officials representing the corrections officers feel the attack could have been prevented. They said one of the main problems is a shortage of officers to guard the inmates. "The Lansing administration has a duty to protect the corrections officers, and with the low staffing, it has resulted in a breach of that security," said Doris Branham, with the corrections officers union. Prison officials are investigating the attack and will turn over their findings to the Leavenworth County prosecutor. No charges have been filed yet. "We are continuing to look into this, and will not let it go," Branham said. Repeated phone calls to the Kansas Department of Corrections and the Lansing Prison were not returned. |
