| Department of Correction reinstates Wally Lamb’s Writers’ Program at the York Correctional Institution |

The Department of Correction has completed its investigation of allegations made against author Wally Lamb by former offenders, and after finding the allegations to be unsubstantiated is reinstating the program effective immediately. Mr. Lamb has led the Writers’ Program on a volunteer basis at the state’s only female prison for the past 20 years. Through his writing workshops at the state’s only female prison, Mr. Lamb helps the women express themselves through self-autobiographical writing, which can result in positive therapeutic benefits. The program was temporarily suspended on July 15, 2019 when it was learned that two formerly incarcerated women were requesting that their writings be removed from the program’s next anthology which had been scheduled for publication this fall. The Department of Correction put the program on hold while it investigated the allegations. The investigation – now complete – found no evidence to suggest Mr. Lamb ever conducted himself less than professionally with any of the inmates participating in the program. “Over the course of the past two decades, Wally Lamb’s contributions to the women at the York Correctional Institution have been invaluable,” said Department of Correction Commissioner Rollin Cook. “I also wish to thank Mr. Lamb for his understanding and patience while we performed our due diligence to ensure the allegations against him were without merit.” |
