Inmate dies while in detention center's care |

A 51-year-old inmate at J. Reuben Long Detention Center died June 19 at a Charleston, S.C., hospital and the death is being investigated by the State Law Enforcement Division, detention-center officials said. Michael D. Watkins of Aynor died at 6:06 p.m. last Sunday of natural causes at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, said Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Dan Bellamy. He is was the second inmate to die this year while in the detention center's care and the fourth since 2003, Detention Center Director Joe Johnson said. Another inmate died in February, he said. Watkins was jailed the Wednesday before his death. Johnson said Watkins was held in the facility's medical unit from his first day. He would not reveal the nature of Watkins' medical condition. Watkins was charged with violation of order of protection and simple assault. Johnson said an autopsy was performed on Watkins last week and results are expected soon. He said SLED has been asked to determine whether any foul play might have been involved. |
