A jail inmate awaiting trial in a shooting that injured his ex-girlfriend and killed her new husband has died of a drug overdose, authorities said. Justin Drew Brown, found unresponsive in his jail cell around 5:45 a.m. last Monday, was taking prescription medication while at the Harrison County (Miss.) Adult Detention Facility, said Sheriff's Lt. Ron Pullen. Brown was held on $2 million bond following his arrest Jan. 23 on charges of murder and aggravated assault. Gulfport police arrested him shortly after a shooting that killed Rick Williams, a Navy sailor recently returned from Iraq, and Williams' bride, the former Erin Tompkins. "The best we can figure, Mr. Brown was hoarding his medicine," said Pullen. "It's not something that was brought in from the outside." Brown, 28, was a Gulfport firefighter. The shooting occurred in the driveway of Brown's home while he was off duty. "It's been a sad thing from start to finish," said John Bell, co-owner of the Village Sports Pub in Biloxi, where Erin Williams was a bartender and waitress. Friends and co-workers described Rick and Erin Williams as "the perfect couple." They met at the Sports Pub while Rick Williams was a part-time employee. The day of the shooting, the couple went to Brown's home on Belmede Drive in Gulfport to retrieve some documents Erin had left there when she and Brown were involved in a relationship. Friends said Rick Williams, 30, was waiting outside in the car when he heard shots and got out of the vehicle. He was struck in the head and died following surgery. His wife was shot twice in the back. Erin Williams, 28, was hospitalized several months. As a result of the shooting, she lost a kidney and suffered damage to several organs. She later developed a major infection and double pneumonia. She went through rehabilitation and has moved to Oklahoma to recover while staying with relatives. An autopsy later last Monday confirmed Brown died by suicide of recent drug intake, said Sheriff George H. Payne Jr. |
