Alabama prisons add 90 officers in new entry-level position |

The Alabama Department of Corrections announced that 90 people graduated from basic correctional officer training last week at the ADOC academy in Selma and will start work at 21 facilities across the state. ADOC created the new basic correctional officer position this year to get more officers on the job in the state’s prisons, where staffing dropped to about one-third of the number needed over the last few years. Basic correctional officers go through six weeks of training instead of the 12 weeks previously required of all correctional officers. The first class graduated in August. Basic correctional officers are certified to supervise inmates, conduct searches, help with educational and vocational programs, and manage and provide rehabilitative services, the ADOC said.
