Private prison for non-citizen criminals prepares to open |

BALDWIN, MI — A private prison in Baldwin that closed in 2017 could reopen as early as this week, with officials expecting the first of up to 1,800 federal inmates to arrive “anytime.” The GEO Group, a for-profit prison operator based in Florida, announced in May that it had entered into a 10-year contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons to house non-U.S. citizen criminals at the North Lake Correctional Facility. “The contract is performance based,” said Facility Administrator Donald Emerson. “But certainly, we’re up to that.
